In Memory of Erik Hempel: A Lifelong Advocate for the Seafood Industry

It is with great sadness that we at the Seafood Consumers Association acknowledge the passing of Erik Hempel, a respected voice in the global seafood industry and a valued member of our Advisory Council. Erik was more than a communicator; he was a passionate advocate for responsible seafood production, a champion of knowledge-sharing, and a mentor to many. His contributions to fisheries, aquaculture, and seafood consumer awareness have left an indelible mark on our industry.

A Life Dedicated to Seafood and Communication

  • Erik’s career spanned decades, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the discourse around aquaculture and sustainable fisheries. Many knew him for his leadership at FAO Globefish, where he worked to improve transparency and global seafood trade information. His ability to convey complex industry insights in an accessible and engaging manner made him one of the most respected seafood communicators in the world.
  • His work with the International Organisation for the Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (EUROFISH) and the Norwegian Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (Nofima) helped bridge the gap between science, policy, and industry. Erik understood the power of communication—not just as a tool for advocacy but as a way to inspire collaboration and progress.

A Passion for Global Seafood Development

  • Erik was deeply committed to the evolution of aquaculture and fisheries management worldwide. His insights into Norway’s success in aquaculture regulation, research, and public-private partnerships were invaluable. He had a unique ability to analyze and articulate what made Norway a global leader in seafood, always eager to share lessons that could benefit other regions.
  • Beyond Europe, his influence extended across continents. Whether working with developing aquaculture industries or engaging with seafood consumer initiatives, Erik never hesitated to contribute his expertise. His vision for a better-informed seafood industry, where knowledge empowered both businesses and consumers, was central to his life’s work.

A Friend, Mentor, and Industry Leader

  • To those who had the privilege of working with Erik, he was more than a colleague—he was a friend and mentor. His wisdom, integrity, and unwavering commitment to the seafood sector earned him the respect of industry leaders, policymakers, and academics alike. He had a rare ability to connect people, fostering collaboration across borders and disciplines.
  • His loss will be deeply felt by those who worked alongside him, but his legacy lives on through the countless individuals he mentored and the industry he helped shape.

Honoring His Legacy

  • At the Seafood Consumers Association, we are grateful for Erik’s contributions to our Advisory Council. His insights enriched our mission to ensure transparency, sustainability, and better seafood choices for consumers worldwide. In his honor, we will continue advocating for informed seafood consumption, carrying forward the values Erik championed throughout his career.
  • To Erik’s family, friends, and colleagues, we extend our deepest condolences. The seafood industry has lost a great advocate, but his impact will not be forgotten.
