WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY DAY 7 June 2025

WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY

This year’s theme is "Food safety: science in action" and it highlights the crucial role of science in ensuring the safety of food through evidence-based guidance and advice for governments, food businessesand importantly, consumers.

Seafood is a valuable source of nutrition

Aquaculture is now a significant part of global seafood production, and it provides a regular sustainable supply of essential nutrients, especially in regions where access to other food sources is limited.

Science-based food safety

Scientific knowledge is crucial for identifying and managing risks, developing effective policies, and ensuring safe handling and preparation of seafood.

Seafood safety is everyone's business

Maintaining food safety through the entire seafood chain requires collaboration and shared responsibility across the supply chain, from production to consumption. Consumers need to play their role in this chain.

Hazards in aquaculture

While similar to wild-caught seafood, aquaculture practices can introduce new hazards, such as the use of antimicrobials and their potential impact on food and water.

World Food Safety Day Activities

  • The World Food Safety Day campaign encourages governments, businesses, consumers, and academic institutions to apply scientific guidance in their practices and decisions to ensure food safety.
  • Events and activities, including food safety quizzes, exhibitions, and webinars, can help raise awareness about the importance of science in food safety.
