Weekly Newsletter 19 July 2026
From the CEO
Welcome to this week's update.
Over the past week we've continued work on one of the Seafood Consumers Association's most important projects—Sea of Deception. The book is now entering its final stages, with work focusing on the reference glossary that will help consumers, industry and policymakers better understand the language of seafood integrity.
As always, our goal is simple: better information leads to better decisions and greater consumer trust.
I have completed a podcast which will be broadcast 28 July 2026 – same day as the Board AGM will take place by coincidence. Trust on the Plate Podcast with Richa Gupta will cover many aspects of recent discussions about seafood fraud and will be on the Aquabeats YouTube channel.
This Week's Focus
Education is the strongest defence against seafood fraud
While governments regulate and industry produces seafood, education remains one of the most effective ways to protect consumers.
That is why SCA continues to develop the I-CADMUS initiative—a practical education and awareness program designed to improve understanding of seafood authenticity, traceability and integrity across the entire supply chain.
An informed consumer asks better questions—and an informed industry delivers better outcomes.
Seafood Consumer Tip
Know the name before you buy.
Australia has nationally recognised Standard Fish Names. Buying seafood identified by its correct Standard Fish Name helps reduce confusion and supports truthful labelling.
If in doubt, ask your retailer:
"What species is this?"
A reputable seafood business should be able to tell you.
