Consumer Rights in the Seafood Industry

As a seafood consumer, having access to accurate and transparent information is essential for making informed and responsible choices. This page is dedicated to providing you with valuable insights into your rights when purchasing seafood products, focusing on labelling, traceability, and ensuring transparency and accountability within the industry. By understanding these elements, you can confidently select seafood that aligns with your values and supports sustainable practices.

As a Seafood Consumer Association, we believe that all seafood consumers have the right to:

  • Access to Safe and Quality Seafood: Consumers have the right to purchase seafood that meets rigorous safety and quality standards. This includes assurance that seafood is free from harmful contaminants, is handled and stored properly and can be easily traced to its origins.
  • Transparency and Information: Consumers have the right to clear, accurate, and comprehensive information about the seafood they purchase. This includes details about the species, origin, harvesting methods, and sustainability practices. Transparent and truthful labeling and open communication from suppliers and retailers are essential.
  • Sustainable and Ethical Choices: Consumers have the right to choose seafood that is sourced sustainably and harvested ethically. This may include options that support the conservation of marine ecosystems, protect endangered species, and ensure fair labor practices within the seafood industry.
  • Informed Decision-Making: Consumers have the right to be educated about the environmental and health impacts of their seafood choices. Access to resources and information about sustainable seafood options empowers consumers to make decisions that align with their values and health needs.
  • Fair Pricing: Consumers have the right to fair and honest pricing for seafood products. This includes transparency about the costs associated with sustainable and ethical sourcing, ensuring that consumers understand the value of their purchases.
  • Responsive and Responsible Industry Practices: Consumers have the right to expect the seafood industry to be responsive to their concerns and committed to continuous improvement in sustainability, safety, and ethical practices. This includes accountability for environmental and social impacts and a commitment to addressing issues promptly and effectively. Consumers expect the industry to be training their staff and making them aware of the needs/wants of consumers.
  • Engagement and Advocacy: Consumers have the right to engage with industry stakeholders and advocate for better practices within the seafood sector. This includes participating in initiatives, providing feedback, and supporting policies that promote sustainable and ethical seafood production.
  • As a Seafood Consumer Association, we are committed to upholding these rights and advocating for a seafood industry that prioritizes the well-being of consumers, marine ecosystems, and coastal communities. Together, we can make informed choices that support a healthier, more sustainable future for all.

Sustainable Fishing Practices

Proper labelling is crucial for making informed decisions about the seafood you purchase. Key elements to look for on seafood labels include:

  • Species Name: The standard marketing name and scientific names of the seafood should be clearly stated.
  • Country of Origin: Information about where the seafood was harvested or farmed. If the fishing area is known that should be stated too.
  • Production Method: Indication of whether the seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised.
  • Sustainability Certifications: There are many labels (too many) so you need to be sure that what you think you are buying is what you get. There is currently no label other than Label Rouge (French Government) that guarantees quality and consistency
  • By understanding these labels, you can make choices that are both delicious and environmentally responsible.

Importance of Traceability

Traceability refers to the ability to track the journey of seafood from its source to your plate. This transparency ensures the authenticity and safety of the seafood you consume. Here’s why traceability matters:

  • Food Safety: Helps quickly identify and address any issues related to contamination or fraud.
  • Sustainability Verification: Ensures that the seafood is sourced from sustainable and ethical practices.
  • Consumer Confidence: Enhances trust and confidence in the products you buy by providing clear information about their origins.

Your Rights as a Seafood Consumer

As a consumer, you have the right to:

  • Access Information: Receive clear, accurate information about the seafood you purchase, including species, origin, production methods, and sustainability certifications.
  • Ask Questions: Inquire with retailers or restaurants about the source and sustainability of their seafood. Reputable sellers should provide this information.
  • Safe and Authentic Products: Expect that the seafood you purchase is safe to eat and accurately labelled to prevent issues related to mislabelling and food fraud.
  • We expect Authorities to come down hard on suppliers who deceive consumers with false labeling as that immediately breaks trust between customer and industry.

Ensuring Transparency and Accountability

To maintain a transparent and accountable seafood industry, it is important that:

  • Retailers and Suppliers: Adhere to stringent labelling and traceability standards, ensuring all information provided to consumers is accurate and verifiable and that they train their staff accordingly.
  • Certifying Bodies: Conduct regular audits and assessments to ensure fisheries and farms adhere to sustainable practices.
  • • Regulatory Agencies: Enforce laws and regulations that protect consumers and promote transparency within the seafood supply chain.
