INTERNATIONAL DAY OF CHARITY - SEAFOOD CONSUMERS ASSOCIATION RECOGNITION
As we mark the United Nations International Day of Charity on September 5, a day designated by the UN to recognize and celebrate charitable organisations worldwide, the Seafood Consumers Association is honoured to have been officially registered as a Not-for-Profit charity.
This international day, established by UN resolution A/RES/67/105, underscores the vital role that charities play in alleviating hardship, promoting education and wellbeing, and fostering a more inclusive and caring society.
SCA Chairperson Peter Wright said this was an important milestone recognising SCA’s commitment to empowering seafood consumers and to promoting transparency, safety, and sustainability across the seafood supply chain.
SCA is proud to announce it has been officially registered as a Not-for-Profit (NFP) charity by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC),” Mr Wright said.
Finally, seafood consumers will have an organisation that engages governments and industry on their behalf.
The SCA is an Australian non-profit organisation committed to advocating for the interests and rights of seafood consumers.
With a focus on delivering accurate, science-based information and championing informed choices, SCA provides resources on seafood safety, nutrition, sustainability, consumer rights, and environmental impact.
"Through educational initiatives, advocacy and international collaboration, SCA supports improved laws, transparent labelling and sustainable seafood consumption,” he said.
“Our aim is to ensure consumers everywhere can access safe and nutritious seafood.”
Mr Wright said the SCA is guided by a specialist international advisory board and is dedicated to raising standards and awareness about the role of seafood in human health and the global environment.
These advances strengthen SCA’s ability to serve and protect the community, secure funding for future projects, and continue providing vital information, advocacy, and leadership for seafood consumers worldwide.
“The SCA’s recognition as a charity will soon be reflected on the Australian Business Register and is now listed in the ACNC’s national register.”
Mr Wright added that SCA is grateful to Craig Gibson and Elinor Riley from the commercial law firm Mills Oakley.
“They were enormously helpful with the incorporation and charity registration process,” he said.
“This was a long, unique, and complex process through Ministerial approvals to use the word ‘Consumer’ in SCA’s name, and it would not have been achieved without their great skills and endeavour.”
Let us all celebrate by enjoying seafood as a delicious way to nourish our bodies, boost brain power, support heart health, and celebrate the best of what nature offers—making every meal a step toward vitality and wellbeing.
